Coach Don Shula to Be Honored for Leadership and Philanthropy
By Tampa’s Moffitt Cancer Center
South Beach Award Dinner at Ritz Carlton on February 3.
He is known for his dynamic coaching skills on the football field. Coach Don Shula led the Miami Dolphins in 1972 to the NFL’s first and only “Perfect Season,” including the Super Bowl, commanding the title “Winningest Coach,” an honor that none come close to.
But off the field, Shula is known for his community leadership and giving heart. Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa is honoring him for that generous spirit at the Board of Advisors’ Leadership & Philanthropy Award Dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach.
The gala is expected to attract more than 500 of Shula’s longtime friends in the sports and entertainment industry for cocktails starting at 7 p.m., followed by dinner at 8 p.m., an award presentation and live entertainment by the
Marcia Mitchell Band.
“His dedication on and off the field has been an inspiration to many and has sparked Moffitt Cancer Center to bring together his family, friends and cancer warriors to say ‘thank you,’” said Sam Donaldson, ABC news veteran, chair of Moffitt’s Board of Advisors and the evening’s host.
Donaldson will be joined by event Co-Chairs Bob Griese, the quarterback of that fantastic 1972 Dolphins team, and his wife, Shay.
“Don has been a great mentor and a wonderful friend,” said Bob Griese, a member of Moffitt’s Board of Advisors. “He has worked hard to find a cure for cancer through his foundation and many lives have been made better for it. We consider it an honor to present this award to him.”
The Leadership & Philanthropy Award is given to recognize the extraordinary professional and civic accomplishments of a community leader. Shula is the first to receive the award. Funds raised at the event will go to benefit research at Moffitt Cancer Center.
